JOB TITLE: Van Driver  (Part-time)

 

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation

 

SUPERVISES: N/A

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must hold valid Maine drivers’ license and have a clean driving record according to our insurance carrier’s guidelines.
  2. Demonstrate English reading and writing skills.
  3. Ability to complete training in location of routes. 
  4. Implement student discipline in accordance with District policies.
  5. No previous experience as a van driver required.
  6. Meet District drug testing guidelines.



NATURE OF WORK:

To provide safe and efficient transportation so students may participate to the fullest possible advantage in district curriculum and extra-curriculum programs with no problems related to transportation interrupting educational programs.



EXAMPLES OF WORK:

  1. Operating up to an 11-passenger van.
  2. Must work appropriately with all age groups.
  3. Must have ability to react quickly and appropriately to hazardous situations involving student safety and stay calm in an emergency.
  4. Must be capable of physically assisting students from the van when necessary which may include students who use wheel chairs or other adaptive equipment.
  5. Must be able to drive in adverse conditions, including icy roads, snowstorms and darkness if applicable.
  6. Will be exposed to cleaning solutions and insects.



REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Obey all traffic laws.
  2. Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses and vans.
  3. Maintains consistent discipline when students are on the van and promptly reports incidents of student misconduct to the building principal or the transportation director if the principal is unavailable.
  4. Develop rapport with students and parents.
  5. Keeps assigned van clean.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Van Driver



  1. Keeps assigned schedule and makes no change without permission of the transportation director.
  2. Checks van before and after each operation for mechanical difficulties.
  3. Notifies the mechanic in case of mechanical failure.
  4. Picks up and discharges students at authorized stops.
  5. Exercises responsible leadership at all times and specifically attends to this when on out-of-district school trips.
  6. Transports only authorized students who are assigned by the transportation director or director of special services.
  7. Reports all accidents and completes required reports.
  8. Administers first aid commensurate with experience and training.
  9. Performs such other duties as shall be reasonable requested by the transportation director.
  10. Maintains mileage log per specification from transportation director.
